The tree

A tree is felled
Photos and article by John Shillito

Remember the largest Holly tree in the state, in the smallest park? Vance Remick of the General Store Cafe was trying hard to take care of that tree, trying to get water to it and creating a little park around it.

Last Friday, September 5, the tree was cut down. It had been examined and declared dead, and arrangements had been made for its removal. The threat of hurricane Hannah must have accelerated the plans, for suddenly it was gone, as was most of its wood. With effort, Vance saved a substantial portion of the trunk so it cold be used to create some appropriate art-work.

My wife Bunny and I happened upon this situation and story the following day, and here are some photos of the sad remainders.
