The festivities start at noon with a picnic on the Lawn with Applegate Farms. Other events will be a Kids Open Mic from 2-4 p.m., the Annual Meeting from 4 – 5 p.m., and our keynote address at 5 with Lex Alexander, Co-Founder of Wellspring Grocery and Founder of 3CUPS in Chapel Hill. The event will be topped off with a wine tasting from 5 to 6 p.m., dinner on the Lawn beginning at 5 pm, and live music featuring The Bad Mother’s & Friends begins at 5:30 pm. It’s hard to believe that we will be 4 years old this May. With current ownership at more than 1,900 people, the store has grown substantially over the last four years. Since our doors opened, we have provided more than $9,400,000 worth of goods to the community. Other benefits to the community include the fact that we return more than 25 percent of our expenses to the local economy, we provide jobs for at least 30 people, and we buy local produce, dairy products, meats, beauty aids, and herbal supplements from local purveyors. Our Pathways to Health series will be going on over the summer months. We will be hosting discussions given by local alternative health care practitioners on a broad range of topics, from addiction to weight loss. The dates and speakers for these events will be posted in our weekly emails and in the store throughout the summer. Friday, May 14th at 6:30 pm we will host a FREE viewing of the film, “Fresh”. This documentary celebrates the farmers, thinkers and business people across America who are reinventing our food system. There will be a panel discussion after the movie. Other events in the busy month of May are a craft fair to be held on the lawn of Chatham Marketplace and “The ReCYCLEery” (cosponsored by The Abundance Foundation). Our craft fair will feature local crafters on Friday, May 7 and Saturday, May 8, selling their wares from 3 to 7 p.m. on the lawn and porch at Chatham Mills. The ReCYCLEry and the Abundance Foundation team up for a day of good food and bike repair on Saturday, May 8 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This unique event is open to the general public and bike repairs will be provided with gusto and at no cost. Come down and see what is happening at YOUR local grocery store. Check the calendar on our website at www.chathammarketplace.coop for a complete listing of all events.
